China-US makers jointly create the future

On June 19th, the 10th-anniversary celebration of the "Chunhui Cup" Overseas Chinese Scholars Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition and the launch ceremony of the 2015 China-US Young Maker Competition were held in Pittsburgh, USA. Representatives from academic and business circles in both China and the US unanimously stated that young entrepreneurs and makers from both countries are seizing a good opportunity and are becoming a new highlight in China-US cultural and people-to-people exchanges. Kirk Skaugen, CEO of Intel Corporation, said: "China is already one of the global innovation centers, and we are excited to contribute to the maker movement and cultural exchanges between young people in China and the US. We hope to support innovation through the company's advanced technology, global vision, and international resources, and build a bridge for international exchange and cooperation for young innovators from both countries."

As one of the important supporting activities of the China-US High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange, this year's China-US Young Maker Competition is themed "Co-create the Future." It focuses on sustainable development areas such as community, education, health, transportation, environmental protection, and energy, combining innovative design concepts with cutting-edge technology to create new products or applications with both industrial and social value. According to the competition schedule, winning teams from various sub-regions in China and the US will compete in the final phase of the finals in China in mid-August this year.

Over 10 years, the "Chunhui Cup" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition has selected 1,654 innovation and entrepreneurship projects by overseas students, of which over 300 have been incubated and launched domestically, covering various fields such as electronic information, biomedicine, new materials, and new energy. Among the shortlisted projects in the previous nine competitions, projects from overseas students in the United States accounted for 41.5%. This year, a North American sub-region was also added for the first time.

Pittsburgh was once a famous industrial city in the United States, known as the "Steel City." However, industrial development also brought thick smoke and dust to the city. With the decline of the steel industry, Pittsburgh's development once faded. Locals told reporters that now, relying on finance, healthcare, and manufacturing, Pittsburgh, located in the US "Rust Belt," has successfully transformed into a nationally renowned innovation and entrepreneurship capital, achieving both prosperity and green development. The launch ceremony for this year's China-US Young Innovation and Entrepreneurship projects being held here carries a special meaning.

Lei Bao, an MBA student at the University of Bridgeport in the United States, was a winner of the 9th "Chunhui Cup," and her award-winning project will soon be launched in Nanjing. Through participating in the "Chunhui Cup" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, Lei Bao deeply realized that China is currently in a period of entrepreneurial opportunity, especially with the national policy support for mass entrepreneurship and innovation. Lei Bao said that the cooperation between China and the US has moved from economy to innovation and creativity, and there are many areas where both sides can learn from each other. China can learn from the US's experience in fostering entrepreneurs across society, which also helps Americans get a closer feel for the Chinese people's ability to innovate and start businesses. Taking mobile internet as an example, Chinese people are more confident in this field, and the US, on the contrary, should learn from China, thereby further promoting equal competition and dialogue between China and the US.

Nathan Smilyk, a biomedical engineer at the University of Pittsburgh and a representative of American young makers, said in an interview with our reporter that although there are differences in history, culture, and development stages between the US and China, these differences also imply opportunities for complementarity and cooperation. The exchange of ideas between young people from both countries in innovation and entrepreneurship is conducive to enhancing mutual understanding and cultivating a group of young talents with innovative awareness and an international perspective. This cooperative force is bound to have a positive and profound impact on the next generation of both countries, and he is full of confidence in this. More importantly, in various cutting-edge fields such as new energy, the US and China can work hand in hand to provide innovative solutions to common challenges faced by countries around the world.
